Frank Sinatra - I've Got You Under My Skin

A:  Frank Sinatra
S: I've Got You Under My Skin
C: The Best Of Frank

I know it's not exactly rock'n'roll but autumn is well on its way. So take a sunny Sunday like today, with yellow and orange leaves falling everywhere, and the best thing you can do is to sit in a rental car and make out. Simply ignoring the world passing by outside. While you listen to a little bit of Frank, of course.

... just the thought of you - makes me stop before I begin.

Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You

A: Melody's Echo Chamber
S: I Follow You
C: I Follow You - EP

Sitiing here in Marseille, I should write this in French. But then why would I do that. It's not like I blog in Swiss German when I am back home. Although that would be fun. Not. Anyway, Melody's Echo Chamber is from Paris, so I've read. Which makes perfectly sense, sitting in Marseille. Sorry I had to fit that in.

... pretend, you need me too.

MS MR - Hurricane

A: MS MR
S: Hurricane
C: Hurricane - EP

Again, I can't believe I haven't posted this, because it is pure gorgeousness. It sounded even more stunning the das before yesterday, while I tool a walk along the German sea side. Taking walks isn't very rock'n'roll, I know. But it felt like I had to do it, once. So anyway, MS MR reads 'Miss and Mister' and are from New York.

... ready for the worst - before the damage was done.

Rihanna - Diamonds

Rihanna - Diamonds from Borko Petrovic on Vimeo.

A: Rihanna
S: Diamonds
C: Diamonds - EP

I guess this is exactly what you expect from a song, perfectly fitting Rihanna like a glove. Easy lyrics, nice beat, little dramaesque theme to it - what else is there to add? Right, to put it in her words: after there weren't too many diamonds to be found on Talk That Talk, it's probably a smart move to release a new song.

... so shine bright - tonight, you and I.

Willow - Sweater

Willow - Sweater from Filip Sterckx on Vimeo.

A: Willow
S: Sweater
C: Sweater - EP

They say life is what's happening while you are busy making other plans. Which is why I planned to travel to the German coast today, called Ostsee. Because I've never seen the German sea before. Anyway. Willow is a band from Belgium. Which is nice. I don't know too many Belgium bands. Forget it, it's too early to blog.

... easy to say, when it makes us get there faster.

Bat For Lashes - All Your Gold

A: Bat For Lashes
S: All Your Gold
C: The Haunted Man

SoI have decided to give Soundcloud a proper try which is why I am posting today's song directly from there. Looks neat, at least. Obviously there's another reason - the official Youtube link doesn't work in Germany. Anyway, I feel a lot of anticipation happening for The Haunted Man, which doesn't happen too often. Better be good.

... stare my heart blank, am I ever gonna let him go?

Folks - Say Something

A: Folks
S: Say Something
C: Say Something - Single

Folks are from Manchester, and kicking against the pricks with rock n roll. They do that pretty swell, if you ask me. So it's Monday. And I'm wondering why every freaking song on this planet must be a love song. Ok there is always the occasional crap like Night Fever, call it the exception to the rule. Folks debut is out a week today, just in case.

... I don't know the way - if you show me I might stay.

Mac DeMarco - Freaking Out The Neighborhood

A: Mac DeMarco
S: Freaking Out The Neighborhood
C: 2

I figure a little slowed down and melancholic song would do no harm today, the first the of autumn, literally and officially. Right, what else to write. There isn't much google information about Mac DeMarco to be found on the net. He's touring at the moment. He or they? Don't even know that. Don't know nothing and nothing makes no sense today.

... next time I'm home - I will still be the same.

Mumford & Sons Feat. Jerry Douglas and Paul Simon - The Boxer

A: Mumford & Sons Feat. Jerry Douglas and Paul Simon
S: The Boxer
C: Babel - Special Edition

It makes me want to do a Forrest Gump and run from one side of the continent to the other. It gives my goosebumps that last longer than three minutes. Ladies and freaking gents, Babel is out. If you ask me, it will be the record of the year. For me, at least. And the special edition sees this great cover of Paul's and Simon's iconic anthem. What not to love?

... a man hears what he wants to hear - and disregards the rest.

Frank Wiedemann & Ry Cuming - Howling

A: Frank Wiedemann & Ry Cuming
S: Howling
C: Howling - Single

The best songs in life are the simple ones. The ones where there is nothing left to add. Like this one, being simply perfect and perfectly simple. Howling is the result of the collaboration between singer & songwriter Ry Cumming from Los Angeles and Frank Wiedemann from Berlin. Frank (one half of Âme) is starting his solo side project with this release. What a start it is!

... I fell into your skin - you had me howling.

Best Coast - Crazy For You

Best Coast - 'Crazy For You' from Bob Harlow on Vimeo.

A: Best Coast
S: Crazy For You
C: Crazy For You

Having rescheduled my workout from evenings to mornings made me realize the following: I'm not cut out to work out in the morning. It can be fun to do things you're not cut out to do. One can get drunk every night if working out takes place in the morning instead of in the evening. You can figure out yourself how this cat video fits into all of that.

... I want to hate you but then I kiss you.

Kanye West Feat. R. Kelly - To The World

A: Kanye West Feat. R. Kelly
S: To The World
C: Cruel Summer

Repeat after me: Kanye is king. And the king is back. Ok, you can stop repeating now. Anyway, Cruel Summer is an amazing album, ten times what Watch The Throne was, which I never really got, appart from Otis. So the only question left is since when is R. Kelly called R. Kelly again. I'm seriously losing track.

... let me see you put your middle finger up - to the world.

Le1f - Wut

Le1f - Wut (Official Video) from Sam Jones on Vimeo.

A: Le1f
S: Wut
C: Wut - EP

I've been told that posting this today is so yesterday. But it's a song per day so we all have to deal with that. Anyway, Le1f is, apparently, the first openly gay rapper, changing the face of rap, literally. At least that is what I've read on a tube called you. At least the song is more interesting than Le1f's sexual orientation. All I'm saying.

... baby line me up - time to step your cookies up.

The Bianca Story - Dancing People Are Never Wrong

A: The Bianca Story
S: Dancing People Are Never Wrong
C: Coming Home

My personal opinion? The song is a lot better than the video. As in: don't watch the video, just listen to the song. Which is a shame, of course, because somebody actually went through the trouble to make this video. Never mind. The whole Coming Home album is quite great, especially coming from The Bianca Story, a Swiss band. I know, I'm anything but a patriot.

... I can only love what feels right.

Desire - Under Your Spell

A: Desire
S: Under Your Spell
C: II

It recently came to my attention that the word smell is very easily mixed up with the word spell. The words themselves, that is, but the whole lot of overloaded feelings that go with them, too. Just saying. Anyway, I was wondering if I should do a Drive Soundtrack week. It is, if you ask me, the best soundtrack, ever.

... I don't eat, I don't sleep - I do nothing but think of you.

15 September 2012

First Aid Kit - Emmylou

A: First Aid Kit
S: Emmylou
C: The Lion's Roar

I remember when Born To Die was released there was some deranged Austrian columnist who went all out for First Aid Kid, being the kind of women men should throuw themselves at, not superficial and artificial girls like Lana Del Rey. I decided then and there to hate First Aid Kid. And I take that back now. Emmylou is freaking gorgeous (but I'm not keen about the video).

... I'm holding back - that's the strength that I lack.

14 September 2012

The Black Keys - Lonely Boy

A: The Black Keys
S: Lonely Boy
C: El Camino

The Black Keys say it all and say it best. And I can't believe I haven't posted this before.

... I got a love that keeps me waiting.

ALT-J - Fitzpleasure

ALT-J "Fitzpleasure" from COSA on Vimeo.

A: ALT-J
S: Fitzpleasure
C: An Awesome Wave

It sounds and feels like there are about six songs rolled into one here. No judgement. That is what ALT-J became known for after releasing their debut album earlier this year. Which caused a stir, according to the record company. But what else are they going to say, right? So anyway, the video was shot and produced in Paris. Doesn't explain much, but it helps.

... where we tent for our treasure, pleasure, leisure, les yeux, it's all in your eyes.

Junes - Come Closer

A: Junes
S: Come Closer
C: Don't Leave Me In Autumn

Junes are back! Not that they ever went away. In fact I don't even know what they've been up to since releasing Don't Leave Me In Autumn. Making this video and touring most probably. Marc, the musical brain behind Junes, used to be my boss, that would be the blond one in the video, who doesn't sing. Still waters run deep, is all I'm saying.

... my fire stays in your sweet embrace.

Saint Lou Lou - Maybe You

A: Saint Lou Lou
S: Maybe You
C: Maybe You - EP

Here's the interesting part, besides the video looking like some sort of Aberzombie & Bitch ad.  Anyway, Saint Lou Lou are twin sisters and were born and raised in Sweden / Australia - I know, it's just around the corner, right? Or is there a Sweden in Australia? I mean, there is a Bethlehem in Pennsylvania!

... if you still remember - if you're reading my name between the lines.

Daughter - Smother

A: Daughter
S: Smother
C: Smother - EP

Funny enough, I posted Daughter before. Which I wasn't awear of when I saw them on stage on Friday. They make for an amazing live performance though. Very haunting, in a good way. Somewhere between if Amy MacDonald wasn't mainstream and some other act I forgot about now. No seriously, they are amazing live, as well as on record, of course.

... I sometimes wish I stayed inside my mother - never to come out.

SBTRKT Feat. Little Dragon - Wildfire

SBTRKT feat. Little Dragon - Wildfire [Official] from Sam Pilling on Vimeo.

A: SBTRKT Feat. Little Dragon
S: Wildfire
C: SBTRKT

It's SBTRKT! They are from the UK and played their last summer concert yesterday at the Berlin Festival. Ok enough about the band - and yes, they were ace. Anyway, I feel like a teenager, yeah, various reasons but this is because the internet connection at home broke and I have to post from a cafe. Maybe a homeless teenager, yeah.

... I could bet all the riches that I ever had.

We Have Band - Oh!

We Have Band - Oh! (Original Version) from We Have Band on Vimeo.

A: We Have Band
S: Oh!
C: WHB

OMFG it's WHB. I know, not exactly new, but I never really knew them. Until yesterday. It's Berlin festival and We Have Band were my personal highlight of the day, for sure. I mean, Miike Snow is just like David Guetta if he sang himself. Anyway, WHB had me dancing from first song to last hit, and normally nothing gets me dancing if I don't know the songs beforehand. Nothing.

... let's speak while the freaks are whispering.

Everything Everything - Cough Cough

Everything Everything - Cough Cough from phil tidy on Vimeo.

A: Everything Everything
S: Cough Cough
C: Cough Cough - EP

Right, I got up 5 minutes ago and everything went wrong already. This is me. Everything Everything on the other hand do everything right at the moment. According to this video, and NME, which I just read. Something about how the four boys from Manchester turned the sound around and have now lyrics to sing along to. Like this one:

... then that Eureka moment hits you like a cop car.

Azealia Banks - 1991

A: Azealia Banks
S: 1991
C: 1991 - EP

So. Miss Banks officially postponed the release of her much awaited debut album from this fall to  spring 2013 (which is like forever, I know) but it looks like she's releasing videos for the 1991 EP by the minute. Fine with me I guess, especially since this is so 90s it hurts.

... I sell you, you buy - that’s my version.

Escapists - Burial

A: Escapists
S: Burial
C: Burial - EP

Surprise - I'm still at the monastery. And got no time to blog. No proper internet connection either, really. But this smashing video by Escapists doesn't need much explanation, which comes in pretty handy. Escapists are from London, by the way, and according to their Facebook profile currently unsigned. Or signed to a record company that is called unsigned. It's quite hard to tell.

... it's just a metaphor - for your heart.

Civil Twilight - Holy Weather

A: Civil Twilight
S: Holy Weather
C: Holy Weather

I'm at a monastery at the moment. I know it sounds wild but it's true. It's a monastery slash vineyard, in the south of Germany. I like wine, just in case there were any doubts. Anyway, Civil Twilight is a four-piece rock band from Cape Town, South Africa. Holy Weather is their second album, and according to me, music as well as lyric-wise nothing but brilliant. Right then, where's that wine?

... no matter how loud I scream - I still hear your voice in my head.

Wet Nuns - Why You So Cold?

A: Wet Nuns
S: Why You So Cold?
C: Why You So Cold? - Single

Big guitar, big rhythm, big song. Can I just say I am liking this big time. What else can you wish for on a Monday morning? It fits perfectly with my current True Blood mood, too. True Blood is my personal 50 Shades Of Grey by the way. And Wet Nuns are a two-piece punk band from Sheffield.

...you bleed me out - and then you put me down.

Family Of The Year - Diversity

Family of the Year - Diversity from Nettwerk Music Group on Vimeo.

A: Family Of The Year
S: Diversity
C: Loma Vista

I guess an introduction is in order, for not even I know who the Family Of The Year are. Not that I am that super duper reference, but still. Judging from this song, this won't be the last time that band ends up on here. Anyway, Family of the Year is an American indie band from Los Angeles, California consisting of members Sebastian Keefe, Joseph Keefe, Christina Schroeter, and James Buckey.

... no one is ever gonna take anything from me again.

Sleigh Bells - End Of The Line

A: Sleigh Bells
S: End of The Line
C: Reign Of Terror

Here's to bangs, here's to Alexis Krauss! I'd say this is pretty freaking beautiful. It makes me want to move to Brooklyn and eat nothing but tumblr. Right, time for me to calm down. Anyway, originally describing the sound of Reign Of Terror, Krauss said, "It sounds really huge, so there's going to still be tons of volume."

... you know it didn't have to be - but it's the end of the line.
