Cults - Total Control

A: Cults
S: Total Control

Cults were the latest band to participate in Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious series, where artists cover another artist’s album in full. Recent entries in the series have included Pure Bathing Culture, Gems, and Frankie Rose. For their part, Cults - whose most recent album, Offering came out two years ago - took on the 1979 self-titled debut from California new wave band the Motels.

Katy Perry - Never Really Over

A: Katy Perry
S: Never Really Over

Everybody has their own Mr. Big at one point or another: the person you keep letting in even though it hurts, even though you swore you were done. Instead of shrouding that notion in big trap beats and a tortured rap coo (hey Ariana), Perry jokes about online stalking and offers up her most impressively tongue-tied chorus to date. She makes bad decisions sound enticing. Relate below.

... but once in a while, I trip up, and I cross the line.

Sugababes - Stronger

A: Sugababes
S: Stronger

Remember when we thought this was mediocre pop music and trash talked the noughties for not producing great hits anymore? 2002 is not only close two decades away from today in time, but also lightyears from what's happening in the charts.

... better find your way out of your fear.

Genesis - Follow You, Follow Me

A: Genesis
S: Follow You, Follow Me

If you are a progressive pop connoisseur like me, you must have felt the tide turning for a while. I've been saying the same about Phil as I have been saying about Elton for the past five years and practically my whole life. These guys got cool written all over them. And with Elton's biopic hitting screens and euphoria alike and Phil touring sold out arenas all over Europe, you all finally agree.

... just one single tear in each passing year.

Men I Trust - Norton Commander

A: Men I Trust
S: Norton Commander

Men I Trust have released a new song from their upcoming album, Oncle Jazz. The Montreal band's album was originally due in February but hasn't yet been released. The laid-back and funky Norton Commander (All We Need) follows Numb, which was released in April. Happy Monday below.

... few things we both have keep us alive.

Mac DeMarco – On the Square

A: Mac DeMarco
S: On the Square

On the Square was Mac DeMarco’s third and final single released before his album was out on May 10. Mac mentioned in an interview that he is drawing from his existing work with the overall record title. He is perhaps using this time of reflection to look back on his catalogue. He’s reached his 6th album and he now has his 7 years as a successful musician to use as inspiration. This is the tone for the record and can be used as the motif for each single.

... is this all that you had in mind?

MorMor - Outside

A: MorMor
S: Outside

MorMor's music could feel like the soundtrack of your life. That is if your life is full of nostalgia and this bittersweet sensation of being grateful for being alive, but yet so scared and unsatisfied like something is missing and you don't know if you're ever gonna find what.

... lonely heart, visit me.

Lo Moon - Thorns

A: Lo Moon
S: Thorns

According to Lo Moon, this one had a life of its own from day one. They loved jamming on it and it was the first song they attempted when they got to Seattle. The tempo changed a few times, especially after they had a few too many cups of coffee but they finally settled in, and it found life right away.

... we walked through the fire.

björk - tabula rasa

A: björk
S: tabula rasa

Björk shared a music video for her song Tabula Rasa earlier this month. The visual, directed by the digital artist Tobias Gremmler, sees Björk’s face superimposed within a colorful, shifting mass. The vaguely humanoid, digitally-rendered figure floats in the air as it expands and contracts. Watch the video below.

... but you will have to deal with shit soon enough.

Lana Del Rey - Doin Time

A: Lana Del Rey
S: Doin Time

Lana's affinity for California is so firmly baked into her music that Doin’ Time, her cover of Sublime’s 1996 song for the upcoming documentary about the ska-punk band, seems like it could have appeared on her debut. Adapting Bradley Nowell’s expressive rapping into her own blasé drawl, the track glides on roiling trip-hop percussion similar to the bossa nova version of Gershwin’s Summertime sampled in Sublime’s original.

... and when she gets home, there's none left for me.

Vampire Weekend - This Life

A: Vampire Weekend
S: This Life

Vampire Weekend have dropped the music video for their Father of the Bride single This Life. As far as 2019, FOTB is my number one record of this year so far. And I'm not even sure another record would make that list at the moment. The new black and white video finds Ezra Koenig, Danielle Haim, and producer Ariel Rechtshaid taking a ride through California. Watch below.

... baby, I know love isn't what I thought it was.

The Black Keys - Go

A: The Black Keys
S: Go

The Black Keys’ aren’t speaking - at least not in the music video for their new song. Go is the latest single from the duo’s forthcoming LP Let’s Rock. The accompanying visual finds Auerbach and Carney struggling to set aside resentment toward one another. In an attempt to reconnect, they endure band therapy and travel to a new age retreat where they practice yoga, take hallucinogenics, and get sage smudged in an effort to resolve their differences. Watch it all go down below.

... find your flame, call her name.

John Lundvik – Too Late For Love

A: John Lundvik
S: Too Late For Love

Is it too late to post this? Even with the final over, I feel that Lundvik's song is a gift that keeps on giving. And while I am not disappointed that The Netherlands gets to host in 2020 for the first time in my lifetime, I would gladly have given this or Norway the trophy.

... maybe I would lit your world with just one spark.

Mansionair - Easier

A: Mansionair
S: Easier

This australian outfit has risen to widespread recognition with their lush instrumentation and enchanting vocal melodies. The trio's release Easier was a striking introduction to their debut album. The track begins with a breath as symphonic production emerges from desolate spaces. With his hauntingly delicate vocals, singer Jack Froggatt, embodies sleepless nights and the anxiety surrounding immobility.

... game's up, we're nowhere to be found.

Billie Eilish - Bad Guy

A: Billie Eilish
S: Bad Guy

Billie Eilish bombs down the street in a tiny car in the surreal new video for Bad Guy off her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? It's not just the first track on the album, but also the funkiest, hence my favorite. Released in March, the video recently saw an update when Melissa McCarthy took over Billie's video on Ellen.

... I like it when you take control.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Too Much

A: Carly Rae Jepsen
S: Too Much

Carly dropped the fourth single of her forthcoming Emotion follow-up album Dedicated. It's a dancefloor headrush of a song, thanks to its plunky, heartbeat synths and some whispery admissions. The lyrics are a textbook in the kind of universal story designed for self-insertion that Carly does best. Check it out and count down: two weeks till Dedicated.

Strong Asian Mothers - Hard to Find

A: Strong Asian Mothers
S: Hard to Find

Prepare yourself for an epic journey into space. Strong Asian Mothers’ single Hard To Find is their greatastic step in blending hip hop, pop and electronic sounds while still trying to harness a live band aesthetic. They say themselves that it’s a tune that’s about the unrivalled feeling of chasing and achieving that great night out.

Barrie - Clovers

A: Barrie
S: Clovers

Throughout 2018, this Brooklyn-based band has put out a string of warm and inviting pop songs, including Canyons and Michigan. Now, they shared their debut album, Happy To Be Here. The Barrie Lindsay-led project kicked things off with Clovers, which is grounded by a bed of wriggling synths and plinking keys. Enjoy below.

Angèle - Balance Ton Quoi

A: Angèle
S: Balance Ton Quoi

If you ever wished Sia was born French and with a little less powerful voice, but still as funky and groovy, let me start this week for you by saying: look no further, your wishes have come true. Not exactly new since Angèle's debut Brol was already released last year, but hey I can't be everywhere.

Claire Laffut - Mojo

A: Claire Laffut
S: Mojo

You might already recognise 24-year-old Claire Laffut. Not only was the Belgian beauty the face of CHANEL’s Gabrielle campaign, she’s also a hugely talented painter and is currently causing a stir in Paris after revealing that she can make bloody good music. A big fan of King Krule and Sade, Claire’s sound is classic French chanson realised in full colour for 2018, then infected with her lust for life.

beabadoobee - Disappear

A: beabadoobee
S: Disappear

Beabadoobee is the type of singer-songwriter that takes your mind somewhere else when you desperately need a moment to escape from reality. The Londoner’s alternative bedroom pop hits are deeply saturated with softcore moods, wrapped up in the gentle embrace of grungy guitars and delicate drum beats. Indulge below.

Operators - I Feel Emotion

A: Operators
S: I Feel Emotion

Uhhlala - I feel my repeat button filing a harassment lawsuit against me, I definitely feel emotions for this song and I also feel the weekend. Canadian synth-pop band Operators have shared this gem of a song off their forthcoming sophomore album Radiant Dawn, out May 17.

... I spend days and nights in nowhere places.

Alice et Moi - Je Suis All About You

A: Alice et Moi
S: Je Suis All About You

The National - Hairpin Turns

A: The National
S: Hairpin Turns

On Friday, the National are putting out a new album, I Am Easy To Find. They’ve debuted the entire album live at this point, with a series of exciting performers including Feist, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers. The new album comes with a short film of the same name that was directed by Mike Mills who also directed the new video for Hairpin Turns but is separate from that project. Enjoy below.

Vampire Weekend Feat. Danielle Haim - Married in a Gold Rush

A: Vampire Weekend Feat. Danielle Haim
S: Married in a Gold Rush

If you haven't listened to Vampire Weekend's new record, released last Friday and called Father Of The Bride, please do it now. You're welcome Anyway, the titular term married in a gold rush is a metaphor for the two singers deciding to tie the knot when everything was going well or perhaps more specifically when they had a more-idealized perception of marriage. So basically: at the same time when everybody else does it.

... please don't say it loud.

Von Wegen Lisbeth - Meine Kneipe

A: Von Wegen Lisbeth
S: Meine Kneipe

Berlin's bestest band has a new album out called sweetlilly93@hotmail.com which is as wild as their debut Grande that counted this track on its list. And if you didn't come here for the German lyrics, you can still enjoy the smooth visuals.

Blow - You Killed Me on the Moon

A: Blow
S: You Killed Me on the Moon

After three notable EPs were released in January 2018, the French group Blow has stepped up into a higher gear. Their first album, Vertigo, was the logical continuation of this musical adventure, forged from a long friendship, and made possible by the group’s increasingly loyal audience. Get blown away below - pun intended.

Madonna - I Rise

A: Madonna
S: I Rise

Last month, Madonna announced her forthcoming album and its titular character, Madame X. The pop icon has already released the lead single, Medellín, to let's - say mixed reactions. After her last album and songs like Living For Love, she couldn't go any lower anyway. Now, she brings us the album’s next track, I Rise. Listen to it below.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk

A: Fleetwood Mac
S: Tusk

Taylor Swift did it again. Last night the whitest of all white singers appeared at the Billboard Music Awards with a marching band, like Beyoncé did two years ago when turning Coachella into Beychella. So of course Twitter went mad. But let me remind you who did marching bands first. You are welcome.

... just tell me that you want me.
