Chromatics - Petals

A: Chromatics
S: Petals

Chromatics unveiled a new cover of Hole’s Petals, which appears on the soundtrack for the new Netflix film, The Perfection. The Portland electronic outfit deftly turn the sprawling Celebrity Skin closer into a concise yet atmospheric tune. Over a blend of gauzy synths and guitars that alternately prickle and carom into space, Ruth Radelet delivers Courtney Love’s vivid lyrics in a compelling croon.

... I never knew what I could be.

Missy Elliott - Throw It Back

A: Missy Elliott
S: Throw It Back

Miss Misdemeanour is back. The rapper, who hasn’t released a new studio album since 2005’s The Cookbook, dropped a surprise EP a week ago today. At just five tracks, Iconolog” will leave you hungry for more - but it’s a little taste of what we’ve been missing. Get nostalgic below.

... if it's competition I put them to shame.

Kim Petras - Heart To Break

A: Kim Petras
S: Heart to Break

Kim Petras first gained recognition from her 2017 pop track I Don’t Want It At All with a 00s video fairytale: shopping at the mall and finding a shrine of Paris Hilton. Now the 25-year-old trans poptimist is back with the video for her latest bubblegum single, Heart To Break. The song - which chronicles the push and pull of relationships and her own heartbreak experiences - feels like it fell right out of Charli XCX's future pop universe.

... even if it means that I'll never put myself back together.

Paradis - Garde Le Pour Toi

A: Paradis
S: Garde Le Pour Toi

If after Trump, Brexit and Crocs you needed one more reason to believe God doesn't exist, the fact that there still is no sophomore album from Paradis in sight, should be proof enough. Still, all the songs from the Paris duo's debut are such timeless gems, that the record is nothing short of being divine itself.

... tout ce qu'on a de commun.

Claire Laffut - Vérité

A: Claire Laffut

Lana Del Rey - Fuck It I Love You & The Greatest

A: Lana Del Rey
S: Fuck It I Love You & The Greatest

Only five days to go until La Rey releases her sixth album Norman Fucking Rockwell and with the countdown in his final stage, here's a double drop giving us a glimpse at what's to come. Nothing short of maybe the bestest songs taken from NFR so far. Fuck it below.

... I like to see everything in neon.

CLIO - T'as Vu

A: CLIO
S: T'as Vu

Samantha Mumba - Lately

A: Samantha Mumba
S: Lately

Ah the sweet bliss of the millennial heart break songs. Unmatched ever since. Not sure the same thing can be said about heartbreaks but as I'm sittin' here watching the days go by I wonder if we got stronger over the years, or just colder. Either way, we will always have Mumba to help us relate.

... but I guess it was heartbreak from the norm.

Sturgill Simpson - Sing Along

A: Sturgill Simpson
S: Sing Along

Recording DILF Sturgill Simpson released the music video to his new song Sing Along, from the animated film Sound & Fury. The film is an anime-style anthology set to the tracks from Sturgill Simpson's forthcoming album Sound & Fury. Think Frozen but for grown ups. Sing along below.

... words can stab as deep as night.

Bat For Lashes - The Hunger

A: Bat For Lashes
S: The Hunger

Bat for Lashes released a self-directed video for The Hunger earlier this month, depicting a witchy seance in the desert. The track appears on her forthcoming album Lost Girls, out September 6th. The video shows Bat for Lashes, aka Natasha Khan, hugging and blessing a group of women on a flat desert plane. The group conduct ritualistic dances and movements out in the sun, with an implied spiritual undercurrent running through the clip.

... I wanna feel like I’m still alive.

Richie Havens - Freedom (Woodstock 1969)

A: Richie Havens
S: Freedom (Woodstock 1969)

Richie Havens opened the Woodstock festival. He wasn’t scheduled to go on until later in the evening but heavy traffic had prevented the opening acts from arriving at the festival. While the other acts were stuck in traffic, Havens performed several encores, playing every song he knew. Searching for another song to sing, he began strumming, getting into a groove, when the word Freedom came to mind. He sang his now-famous song for the first time, on stage at Woodstock, making the words up as he played. He later told the story of having to see the movie Woodstock, so that he could hear how the song went so he could perform it again.

Janis Joplin - Ball & Chain (Woodstock 1969)

A: Janis Joplin
S: Ball & Chain

This happened today 50 years ago, and if you've been wondering since then if you have gotten older, let me reassure you that the opposite is true, and that music has gotten worse. Talking about age, JJ was 26 when this performance happened. Gasp below.

... tell me why just because I got to want your love.

Canned Heat - On The Road Again (Woodstock 1969)

A: Canned Heat
S: On The Road Again

Well, here we go - Woodstock happened 50 years ago and for all of us who missed it, I guess we have never really lived. Anyway, here's Canned Heat's gorgeous performance of their heartbreaking classic.

... please don't you cry no more.

Dermot Kennedy - Outnumbered

A: Dermot Kennedy
S: Outnumbered

The feeling of finding the one is maybe the most powerful feeling in the world. The intensity of it is enough to drive almost every decision you make. It is why people enter long distance relationships with confidence, and with all odds against them, survive them. Or don't. It is the feeling, strong as ever, that keeps love alive when distance separates it. Dermot Kennedy’s track Outnumbered captures the feeling of knowing that fighting for the one you love, even when distance separates you, is worth it.

... I see the beauty that you can't see.

Lana Del Rey - Looking For America

A: Lana Del Rey
S: Looking For America

Lana's latest song, Looking for America, was written in response to a weekend of bloodshed: the 31 people who died in gun massacres in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. It begins with a road trip through California. Watching children at play, she murmurs that she used to only worry about them after dark. Her nostalgic Americana predates the Kennedy assassination. Now each of us who visit a public space live in fear, and in fear begin to curtail our own freedoms.

... it's just a dream I had in mind.

Yeasayer - I'll Kiss You Tonight

https://youtu.be/UwMNYHSWQxc

A: Yeasayer
S: I'll Kiss You Tonight

Boy, do Yeasayer like to keep fans waiting. They took four years between their last two records - 2012’s Fragrant World and 2016’s Amen & Goodbye, and have barely made a peep since. But in April, finally, they returned back with their first new music in three years, I’ll Kiss You Tonight. Kiss back below.

... I was waiting by myself.

YES I'M VERY TIRED NOW - Geronimo

A: YES I'M VERY TIRED NOW
S: Geronimo

It's been a while but all the waiting and praying finally got answered and YIMVTN, my favourite Swiss act that doesn't perform in a Swiss language, finally released this new track Geronimo. So far there hasn't been any update on a new record, but I keep you as updated as an operating system by Microsoft. Enjoy below.

... even i don’t know when it ends.

10cc - I'm Not In Love

A: 10cc
S: I'm Not In Love

How does this sound so 80s when it was released in 1975? Either way one of the greatest love songs ever released and a gem I recently rediscovered when rewatching the first season of Mindhunter because the second one will drop this Friday so get ready and get grooving to this, pun intended, killer track.

... big boys don't cry.

Keane - Love Too Much

A: Keane
S: Love Too Much

The East Sussex foursome's latest release hears them revisit their signature piano-driven sound. Keane have released a video for their new single, Love Too Much, ahead of the release of their first album in seven years. I'd rate the songs lyrics higher than the melody, but I guess they come in a package deal.

... only want to say that I gave it all I had.

The Darkness - Rock and Roll Deserves to Die

A: The Darkness
S: Rock and Roll Deserves to Die

Guess who's back. The Darkness have released a new video for their new single Rock and Roll Deserves to Die. It’s the first taste of new material from the band’s upcoming studio album Easter Is Cancelled, which will launch on October 4. Mourn below.

... all of us have built a house of cards.

Bon Iver - We

A: Bon Iver
S: We

Rejoice, the new Bon Iver album is here. On his fourth album, Justin Vernon reassembles the familiar Bon Iver elements like a cubist collage, with his voice fearlessly front and center. The result is his most honest and forthright music ever.

... we heard that story before.

Slove - Carte Postale

A: Slove
S: Carte Postale

Slove is playful. It’s sexy and suggestive. It teases you. Even leads you on sometimes. It’s highly addictive too. Slove. Slow + Love as we find out when we speak with Léo Hellden and Julien Barthe, the two men behind what is arguably one of the strongest efforts to come out of Paris this year, which was the year 2011 when this Le Dance, the record that is home to Carte Postale, was released.

... 29, 30, 40, si tu as un plan cheval, let me know.

Sufjan Stevens - With My Whole Heart

A: Sufjan Stevens
S: With My Whole Heart

We live in particularly trying times for optimism, but here is Sufjan Stevens, shaking things up and teaching us to love again. With My Whole Heart is his self-described attempt to write an upbeat and sincere love song without conflict, anxiety, or self-deprecation. Inevitably, he almost falls apart less than two minutes in. You can almost sense him gazing out the window wistfully before remembering the task at hand.

... and I confess that I'm a mess but I will always love you.

Hovvdy - Petal

A: Hovvdy
S: Petal

This bedroom pop gem is brought to you by Hovvdy, a talented duo from Austin, Texas. The music on their 2018 record Cranberry conjures a steady, gentle longing. Foggy, warm, and wistful, it sounds like faded time.

... I had a feeling with who you used to be.

Muddy Monk - Baby

A: Muddy Monk
S: Baby

French up your Sunday with this super joli chanson de Muddy Monk, alias Guillaume Dietrich, who is actually Swiss. Anyway, there is an entire record out since last November that brings you a total of ten stunning Muddy songs called Longue Ride. So off you go.

... baby mes lèvres n’ont pas les superpouvoirs.

Chris Farlowe - Out Of Time

A: Chris Farlowe
S: Out Of Time

Here's another track featured in Tarantino's new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The Rolling Stones song was used in the Chris Farlowe version and didn't make it onto the official soundtrack, so yes - you are welcome.

... you've been away for far too long.

HAIM - Summer Girl

A: HAIM
S: Summer Girl

Early on in the making of Haim’s 2017 album Something to Tell You, the band’s producer and Danielle Haim’s romantic partner Ariel Rechtshaid learned that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Though he’s since recovered, Haim’s new song Summer Gir was born at a time when his prognosis was still uncertain. Co-produced by Rostam and Rechtshaid himself, the sweetly plaintive song captures the disquieting feeling of trying to conjure up any ounce of hope in a grim situation.

... you walk beside me, not behind me.
