Peter Fox - Alles Neu

A: Peter Fox
S: Alles Neu
C: Stadtaffe

Stadtaffe was the summer album 2009 - probably the album 2009 altogether. Today I'll pay tribute 'to ex-and-again-Seeed-singer' Peter Fox who created a tribute record to his hometown Berlin that was/is beyond any standard. To put it in the words of a 'Mars' claim: Pleasure you can't measure.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

A: Arcade Fire
S: The Suburbs
C: The Suburbs (out 03.08.10)

Yesterday we all celebrated the release of the new Scissor Sisters album Night work - and today Summer just got better! Arcade fire will release their 3rd studio album come august - and I might just consider moving, to the suburbs, of course. Check out the tube for more songs of the new record.

Light Asylum - Knights and Weekends

A: Light Asylum
S: Knights and Weekend
C: (no clue whatsoever)

Right, there was a promise I made yesterday so this is the best quality song clip I could find. Light Asylum, fav band of Telepathe (and many others, according to raving youtube comments!), haven't got an album out - so it might just be the next best big amazing thing to happen! You lot better all make sure this is the first place you ever heard of it... if it is.

Telepathe - So Fine

A: Telepathe
S: So Fine
C: Dance Mother

Somewhere between avan-tgarde and electropop, Telepathe released their so so fine debut album last year. Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais, both leftovers of the band Wikkid, live and compose in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - where else? According to their Myspace-page, Light Asylum is their favorite band in the world. Let's see what I'll post tomorrow... mmh.

Underworld - Scribble

A: Underworld
S: Scribble
C: Scribble - EP

Not by me - but it sums things up pretty much to the point:
Hand held camera: $400
Petrol: $20
Hours spent adding coloured effects: 3
The look on Karl's face as he loses himself in the music: Priceless.

Blondie - One Way or Another

A: Blondie
S: One Way or Another
C: Parallel Lines

I'll keep it short today - iconic songs don't need many words. Lady Harris is one of a kind, probably sexiness personified. Any questions left? No, didn't think so...

24 Juni 2010

Stars - Fixed

A: Stars
S: Fixed
C: The Five Ghosts

Originally from Canada, founded in New York City and released in Berlin. Singer and guitarist Torquil Campbell worked as an actor before (in Sex and the City, just to name one...). On their special edition to the new album 'The Five Ghosts', the combo features bands like The Album Leaf and Of Montreal (just to name two...) - so you might wanna think twice bout spending a penny or two more.

Shy Child - Disconnected

A: Shy Child
S: Disconnected
C: Liquid Love

Shy Child formed in the summer of 2000, when former college friends Pete Cafarella and Nate Smith separately moved to New York. The duo shared a love for progressive rock and electronic music, and started playing music together in an attempt to create a fusion of the genres. Fusion confusion is always a good start.

Uffie - Pop The Glock

A: Uffie
S: Pop The Glock
C: Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans

Believe the hype. Pop the clock came out three years ago, the debut album two weeks ago. French Singer Uffie was busy having a baby and doing all sorts of other stuff. While the world waited... Was worth it tho. The long and fantastic album titel 'Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans' says it all, this record is a summer bitch banana crazy itch machine!

Kele - Tenderoni

A: Kele
S: Tenderoni
C: The Boxer (out 21.06.10 - as in: today)

Bloc Party singer Kelechukwu "Kele" Rowland Okereke (pronounced O-kay-ray-kay) does it solo. Nice to know: Kele does not like interviews. He has expressed disdain for them, asking one interviewer from Skyscraper magazine, "Why is it important to know what I had for breakfast? Or who I went to bed with? Or what sneakers I am wearing? If it's relevant to understanding my music, then so be it. But if it's purely to satisfy the media's obsession with celebrity, then no thanks. I don't want to play that game."
Well as long as he plays fine music it's fine by me.

Sophie Auster - The Last Poem

A: Sophie Auster
S: The Last Poem
C: Sophie Auster

Apparently Sophie Auster is the daughter of a famous father and a famous mother I have never heard of - great writers, by the way. What's worse is that her debut album was released four years ago, haven't heard of that either. Call me ignorant, I don't know. Anyway, a follow up album should be on it's way, I'll make sure we don't discover that one until four years after it has been released.

Chris Garneau - Fireflies

A: Chris Garneau
S: Fireflies
C: El Radio

El Radio has been released on Absolutely Kosher Records, must be the greatest name of a record label EVER. Garneau grew up in Boston, lived in Paris, then moved to New Jersey and eventually to New York. I can't really decide if the video is cheap or great, maybe it's cheaply great or greatly cheap, but at least it's different, nice, unusual, and I wonder what the song feels like if you listen to it before you watch the clip.

Monarchy - Love Get Out Of My Way

A: Monarchy
S: Love Get Out Of My Way
C: (haven't got a clue)

Jeees - I think Monarchy are shaping up to become my new favorite band this summer. It's the perfect sizzling mix of MGMT and Scissor Sisters, just like a rump steak on a grill. Spice it up with some whatever you are into and off goes the garden party started. Don't really know why the sound is so quiet, just turn the stereo up.

Robyn - Dancing On My Own

A: Robyn
S: Dancing On My Own
C: Body Talk Pt. 1

Yes it's only Party 1, there are two more to follow this year, apparently. I have a vague memory that when Röyksopp released their last album 'Junior', they planned on releasing a second one the same year 'Senior'. So far it hasn't happened, and let me just tell you this, it wasn't this year.
Anyway, I can slowly but surely bring myself to look at Robyn whilst she's performing. Always liked the songs, but the looks were a hole different story.

Deluka - Cascade

A: Deluka
S: Cascade
C: Deluka - EP

Born in the Uk, raised in the Us, basically (originally from Birmingham, Deluka inked a deal with Brooklyn indie label VEL Records). They are an English electronic, indie band, whose sound has been likened to nearly every genre from Punk to Disco, Electro to Indie and New Wave to No Wave.

Lesley Meguid - Love

A: Lesley Meguid
S: Love
C: The Truth About Love Songs

I am well aware of the fact that radio stations have played the song to death by now, but since I never listen to any them it's all brand new for me. Most swiss acts are missing that 'je ne sais quoi' most of the time, in other words: it's plainly obvious that they are swiss and not made for an international stage. This one is different I guess. Maybe it's just a sweet song in its own right. But I do like it, swiss or not.

14 Juni 2010

Suckers - Black Sheep

A: Suckers
S: Black Sheep
C: Wild Smile

So indie it hurts! Here is the list of over-used adjectives that help you get your head around the Suckers sound, words like psychedelic, dreamy, blissed-out, druggy, expansive, lush. Got it? By the way, is there any need to point out how fantastic the band name is? I think if i had a band i'd call it 'i heart porno'.

13 Juni 2010

Scala & Kolacny Brothers - Hungriges Herz

A: Scala & Kolacny Brothers
S: Hungriges Herz
C: Grenzenlos

Special, I'd say. Very special. Truly beautiful, which a touch of uncanny. I want the lamps and the sofa from the video! Anyway, Scala is a girls choir from Belgium, about 60 girls between 14 an 24 years of age. So it's all a bit Lolita, if you know what i mean.

We Are Scientists - The Great Escape

A: We Are Scientists
S: The Great Escape
C: With Love And Squalor

According to them, the music of 'We Are Scientists' is just like a race car that crashes into a huge giant cupcake: exciting, sweet and squishing!
In order to celebrate 'Barbara', the brand new and fantastic album by We Are Scientists, I decided not to post the new video 'Rules Don't Stop', but my favorite: 'The Great Escape'.As always, the genius innocence on their first album 'With Love And Squalor' is a teeny weeny bit more exciting than the stuff they produce these days.

Bonaparte - Computer In Love

A: Bonaparte
S: Computer In Love
C: My Horse Likes You

Bonaparte is Berlin all over. It's the sound (ok it has a touch of brit), it's definitely the looks, and most of all the lyrics: stuff like 'who is google anyway' and 'i'm your glory hole to the universe' can only be composed by a band based in Germany's capital. Bonaparte is Swiss founded though, born in Barcelona, and consists of 8 members from Germany, France, Austria, Poland, Panama, New Zealand, Brasil and of course, Switzerland. It's basically the whole World Cup in one band!

10 Juni 2010

Lady Gaga - Alejandro

A: Lady Gaga
S: Alejandro
C: The Fame Monster

Next. Since I feature any video that is longer than eight minutes, I had to go with this one, as well as any new Gaga vids recently. Apparently "Gaga's work with Steven Klein, Madonna's favorite director, resulted an ultimate reference to Madonna's best videos". Wonder if that means he basically didn't have any new ideas. Well it looks stylish anyway.

09 Juni 2010

Miami Horror - Moon Theory

A: Miami Horror
S: Moon Theory
C: Illumination (out soon)

From Melbourne, Australia. Again! What's going on down there, are they casting '80s sound-alike talent by the minute? Apparently it's electro-pop with a disco-house throwback style, and they were influenced by Prince and Abba. Apart from Marlboro man going all vegetarian, I am all for it.

08 Juni 2010

Diana Vickers - The Boy Who Murdered Love

A: Diana Vickers
S: The Boy Who Murdered Love
C: Songs From The Tainted Cherry

So it's pop music, who cares. I thought about posting this one for some days now - there is obviously nothing special about the song or the video, but I do like the album title (the longer the better), and the husky tone in Diana's voice drives me totally itchy bananas. So i guess I do like it. To cut a long sentence short: right voice, wrong song. Today it's all: a voice a day keeps the doctor away.

Graffiti 6 - Stare Into The Sun

A: Graffiti 6
S: Stare Into The Sun
C: Annie You Save Me (out 05.07.10)

I actually don't really know if I'm posting this because of the video or the song. Anyway, Graffiti 6 are the next big thing to happen, and apparently the lazy bastards haven't made a video of their own yet. No judgement.

The video is Ian Stevenson's piece of art, if you didn't figure it out yourself, here is what it is all about: Revealing the world of a strange small man, who spends his days away from the world. While divulging in strange pleasures he is suddenly thrown into a fantastical journey.

Midnight Juggernauts - Into the Galaxy

A: Midnight Juggernauts
S: Into the Galaxy
C: Dystopia

New stuff from down under, Melbourne. The band has been described as anything from 'prog dance meets cosmic film scores', to 'slasher-flick disco' to 'deadpan landscape'. I like 'slasher-flick disco' most.
There would have been more interesting songs to post than this one, but then there wouldn't have been a video, so we're stuck with this one at the moment. Wait for more!

Rolling Stones - Rocks Off

A: Rolling Stones
S: Rocks Off
C: Exile On Main Street

On hot sunny summer days like today, you simply have to go '70s. You should go '70s at least once a day, any day. '60s and '80s on every other day. But on a day like today, you have to go '70s, you have to get rolling, you have to get stoning!

By the way: Super 8 footage was shot by Robert Frank of The Rolling Stones in LA and NY, 1971. Rephotographed by Frank for the cover of 'Exile On Main Street'.

04 Juni 2010

William Fitzsimmons - If You Would Come Back Home

A: William Fitzsimmons
S: If You Would Come Back Home
C: The Sparrow and the Crow

According to William, all his songs, which he labels 'soul-metal-folk', sound quite the same. They probably kind of do, but since they are all so beautiful, it doesn't really matter. To me, William's voice must be the most beautiful ever recorded, although beautiful doesn't really fit as description. That's the stunning thing about it, it's beyond any description.

Division Kent - Faraday Cage

C: Monsterproof

RIP Andrea Bleuler Neeser.
Division Kent have always been an act far beyond any Swiss standard.

Rox - I Don't Believe

A: Rox
S: I Don't Believe
C: Memories (out 04.06.10)

The good thing about talent is you know it when you see it, or in Roxanne Tataei case, when you hear it.

Her debut album 'Memories' is bound to bring conviction to your sound-system; A powerful voice on a stage with a tale or two to tell. Half Jamaican and half Iranian, at the tender old age of 21, her songs are the fortuitous result of hard graft and a singular minded headspace.

.. at least that's what it says on her myspace site .. on herspace site.

Leona Naess - Leave Your Boyfriends Behind

A: Leona Naess
S: Leave Your Boyfriends Behind
C: Thirteens

Leona was born in New York, grew up in London, and moved back to the big apple when she was 18. She modeled for Calvin Klein before starting out in the music business. Whatever.
Anyway, definitely both beautiful in appearance and talent, I mostly like the title of her second album 'I Tried To Rock You But You Only Roll'.
