This is your daily song calendar - every day there is a new song or music video waiting for you. Maybe you hate it, maybe you love it - maybe you already know it or maybe you'll just discover something new! Either way, it's all about the music and a little bit about the lyrics. And since you're here, I will share what I've learned over the years: An apple a day keeps the doctor away but if the doctor is cute - screw the fruit!

Zowie - Broken Machine
A: Zowie
S: Broken Machine
C: Broken Machine - EP
Taking yesterday's video creativity and adding a touch of New Zeeland quirkiness, a breeze of camp and much needed colors beeping our computer screens: here comes Zowie. As in David, but different, without the David, obviously. I read that this sounds like The Ting Tings going for coffee with Uffie - just imagine if they went for a boogie. I like!

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are
A: Bruno Mars
S: Just The Way You Are
C: Doo Wops & Hooligans (out 05.10.10)
Here's Uk's Number 1, Bruno Mars debut single to his debut album 'Doo Wops & Hooligans' (out 05.10.10), and my dilemma of the week: I like the video much more than the song. Then again, if I listen to the song without watching the video, I get kind of hooked too. Dedicating this one to the girl who lives across the courtyard from where I nest, because, to me, she is: amazing.

Esben and the Witch - Marching Song
A: Esben and the Witch
S: Marching Song
C: Marching Song (out 11.10.10)
Fall has officially arrived on the northern hemisphere and it is time to take music to a somehow darker level. About to release their debut next week, Brighton three piece Esben and The Witch make a perfect match. They take their name from a Danish folk tale and Last.fm named their claustrophobic, brooding sound “Nightmare Pop”, with good reason.

Maximum Balloon feat. Theophilus London - Groove Me
A: Maximum Balloon feat. Theophilus London
S: Groove Me
C: Maximum Balloon
My Beautiful Laundrette gets a whole new meaning with this clip by Maximum Balloon as in David Andrew Sitek, better known as a member of the band TV on the Radio. What else to say, to me this is one of the top ten albums this year, since Katrina Ford, Little Dragon or Karen O get featured along the way. Buy it. Now.

OK Go - White Knuckles
OK Go - White Knuckles - Official Video from licked on Vimeo.
A: OK Go
S: White Knuckles
C: Of The Blue Color Of The Sky
Can I have a dog please!? Here's the thing and something I wanted to get off my chest for some time now: having a daily blog is like being married. Well, or like being in a relationship (not that I'm an expert on either, not on being married, that's for sure). You, or I for that matter, love it - most of the time, but sometimes it is a bit like 'do we have to do it today'..

I Am Arrows - Green Grass
A: I Am Arrows
S: Green Grass
C: Sun Comes Up Again
I Am Arrows, founded by former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows in June 2009, released their debut this summer. There seems to be a shot of drama in all things Razorlight involved: Eleven days after Andy left, it was revealed that he had signed to Universal Records – the same record label as his ex-band.. do you know what I mean!? By the way, I love the track but it is not the most exciting album title around.

Villagers - Becoming A Jackal
A: Villagers
S: Becoming A Jackal
C: Becoming A Jackal
Being my lazy self today, I simply copy/paste this from youtube: Becoming a Jackal is a heart-wrenching, melodic piece full of lyrical finesse; its the sort of song you want to play on repeat until every last note is engrained in your mind. Becoming a Jackal is a little taster of whats to come from Conor J. O Brien and his esteemed colleagues forthcoming debut LP.

Black Mountain - Old Fangs
"Old Fangs" by Black Mountain from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.
A: Black Mountain
S: Old Fangs
C: Wilderness Heart
Put an old Mustang into any bands footage and I'll be hooked immediately, if not sooner. Plus the clip features the indian summer mood outside my window just perfectly. Now this might be a slight harder touch to rock music, but in times when Kings Of Leon and the likes use choirs and stuff in their so called rock songs, it can't do no one no harm to go back to basics.

Chromeo - Don't Turn The Lights On
Don't Turn The Lights On from Chromeo1 on Vimeo.
A: Chromeo
S: Don't Turn The Lights On
C: Business Casual
Sheer brilliance in ideation for the music video - Chromeo have been around for a while but are still far from streaming the main. The two childhood friends jokingly describe themselves as "the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture." Probably sad, and probably true.
The electro funk lovers release the official video for their energizing single Don't Turn The Lights On, the second single from the Business Casual album, Chromeo's third full-length effort.

The Ting Tings - Hands
The Ting Tings - Hands from Warren Fu on Vimeo.
A: The Ting Tings
S: Hands
C: Kunst (out 10.10.10)
The new The Ting Tings album 'Kunst' will be released on the coolest possible album release date in 2010 - on 10.10.10. If I would release an album it would be on the exact same day. But I don't. With another much anticipated album release by a band from Manchester it is safe to say that the city up north is definitely outstripping London this year. And we all know that the Take That and Robbie reunion is still to come!

OMD - If You Want It
A: OMD
S: If You Want It
C: History of Modern
OMD were huge in the '80s, apparently. And they are back, so I hear. Since yesterday's video was already all stunning things ballet, I thought we stay on that track. Some newspaper wrote that this is the godfather of LCD Soundsystem, Hurts and The XX - then again, you shouldn't believe everything that they print on paper. Enjoy it, anyways.

Zazie - Avant L'Amour
A: Zazie
S: Avant L'Amour
C: Za7ie
You probably have to be French to get this one, the song and the lyrics I mean, which you are probably not, so you most likely won't. Which isn't a bad thing, of course, and in which case I suggest you simply focus on the beauty of the video, and the dancer. Jeez - I almost wrote cancer there. Funny thing, replace the first letter in dancer, by the alphabetically preceding letter. There's a story there. Tomorrow. When I'm not drunk.

Tricky - Murder Weapon
A: Tricky
S: Murder Weapon
C: Mixed Race (out 27.09.10)
This is Arty Farty done right, as in it's perfection. Tricky's new album Mixed Race is due next week and first single Murder Weapon a reworking of the classic dancehall hit from Jamaican-born Echo Minott, originally released in the early '90s. Tricky fell in love with the track and was determined to hear how it would sound with a female vocalist. Works for me, I'd say.

Heavy Trash - (Sometimes You Gotta Be) Gentle
A: Heavy Trash
S: (Sometimes You Gotta Be) Gentle
C: Midnight Soul Serenade
It is always a good thing when trash isn't just in the name, but also in the music - which is, in this case, a compliment and probably exactly what the band intended. Heavy Trash is an American rockabilly band based in New York City, formed by Jon Spencer of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Matt Verta-Ray (formerly of New York bands Madder Rose and Speedball Baby).

Weezer - Memories
A: Weezer
S: Memories
C: Hurley
It is like it is, might be good or bad, but the most talked thing about the new Weezer album wasn't the music, but the cover - which is lacking band name and title, and only shows the face of actor Jorge Garcia. Then there is the album name, of course, Hurley, named after the «Lost» caracter. Apparently the band was looking for a appropriate album name, didn't find one, and picked, in the end, a name that didn't have anything to do with the album. A technique I totally adore.

Prince - Gold - Hurts Choice
A: Prince
S: Gold
C: The Gold Experience
Today's song of the day was picked by Manchester's most retroriginal export this year, Hurts. Having meeted & greeted them in style (theirs and mine, of course), after last nights show in Zurich, the two lads from up north were so kind to chose today's tune to do. So this is for you, from Hurts, through me, or something like that.
According to NME, the bible in all things music, music needs a band like Hurts right now, so I figure it is a pretty cool thing and perfect timing they showed up. Charts entries all over Europe prove them right, NME that is, and Hurts.

Yoav - Yellowbrite Smile
A: Yoav
S: Yellowbrite Smile
C: Foolproof Escape Plan (out 24.09.10)
Yoav's long-anticipated second album is finally about to be released at the end of the month. He is probably Israel's hottest and most talented export in pop music and a college drop out, much like me, with the slight difference that I have no musical talent whatsoever. Well, I can write about it, so there is one thing.

Natalie Merchant - Saint Judas
A: Natalie Merchant
S: Saint Judas
C: Motherland
Ok, being one day late, I will keep this one short. Natalie has big biggens and an even bigger voice - which is far more interesting, of course, but breasts sell, obviously. 'Motherland' was released in November 2001 and dedicated to all victims of what is today known as 9/11. It is, if you ask me, the only relevant musical or cinematographic contribution on that subject.

Barbara Panther - Empire
A: Barbara Panther
S: Empire
C: Empire - EP
Born in Ruanda, raised in Brussels and trained in Berlin, it doesn't get much more talented than this young lady. Sounding pretty much like a pretty smooth mash up between Björk, Roisin and Deijer and looking even better than Grace when she was looking good, it is not that hard to guess that master mind behind the tracks is Matthew Herbert. Yes please, more please.

Bag Raiders - Way Back Home
A: Bag Raiders
S: Way Back Home
C: Bag Raiders (out 01.10.10)
Bag Raider's self-titled debut album is about to break, October 1. They are probably somewhere between a bit cheesy and a bit copy, but I like the video and I think the tune suits a sunny friday afternoon at the office. And after. And between the at and the after. Anyway, Bag Raiders are two DJs from down under and they have been around for four years. Cheers.

Kings Of Leon - Radioactive
A: Kings Of Leon
S: Radioactive
C: Come Around Sundown (out 15.10.10)
I decided to post the song of the day of tomorrow already today - let's call it breaking song, as in breaking news on television, obviously. Fresh of the camera and only two hours old, comes the hottest new shizzle song of all good rock gods Kings Of Leon. Jeez - I am so excited I don't even know what I'm writing. There is one thing tho, what's the choir doing in a rock music video!?
The Xx - Basic Space
A: The Xx
S: Basic Space
C: The Xx
Ladies and gents, boys and girls - bitches and bastards: I give you The Xx and last night's winner of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. They got my approval, Mercury that is. The Xx are from another world anyway. You can never put the finger on what the music is all about, and I think that no band before managed to evoke such emotions with so basic compositions.

KT Tunstall - (Still A) Weirdo
A: KT Tunstall
S: (Still A) Weirdo
C: Tiger Suit (out 22.10.10)
KT is back. I would normally put an exclamation mark there but I have stopped using them, they are overrated and overused. Anyway, 2010 is definitely a fantastic year in music history with Lady Tunstall releasing her third album Tiger Suit on October 22. I might have told you this before but I will tell you again: KT once told me she loved my tattoos. And I told her i loved her. Simple.

Jónsi - Animal Arithmetic
A: Jónsi
S: Animal Arithmetic
C: Go
Sigur Rós guitarist and vocalist Jónsi does it solo. Jonsi is short for Jón Þór „Jónsi“ Birgisson, make sure you get the emphasis right! He is blind in his right eye (quote: „If I saw in stereo I'd go mad.“), a raw food vegan and openly gay, although I think there is no connection there. To describe his music which is an explosion of sounds seems pretty impossible, so I won't even try.

Kleerup & Lykke Li - Until We Bleed
A: Kleerup & Lykke Li
S: Until We Bleed
C: Kleerup
This was a tough one. You probably think I post random songs on a daily basis, but there is an actual search involved. I do try to post songs that matter, that match my personal mood and the weather (they somehow are related to one another) and that fit into the idea of A Song A Day. So today wasn't easy. But I think 'Until We Bleed' is the perfect soundtrack on a lazy sunday afternoon.

Kylie Minogue - Get Outta My Way
A: Kylie Minogue
S: Get Outta My Way
C: Aphrodite
Your Saturday night starts right here: kitsch, camp, glam, is alright for some. Lady Minogue doesn't really show us anything new, but at least she's still fully capable to return to her fashionable self. Probably not the best track of her recent album 'Aphrobitch'. We'll wait for catchier releases and hope for a video of the gorgeous duet with Hurts called 'Devotion'.

The Hundred In The Hands - Pigeons
A: The Hundred In The Hands
S: Pigeons
C: The Hundred In The Hands (out 20.09.10)
Uuuh, vile - and a happy weekend to you too. The Hundred In The Hands are about to release their debut album. They call their music psychedelic disco house, you might just call it ace. According to their so far so short myspace-bio, they actually started writing songs together before they formed a band. Sweet, no?
02 September 2010
I Blame Coco - Selfmachine
A: I Blame Coco
S: Selfmachine
C: The Constant (out 02.10.10)
You know, some blame it on the sunshine, moonlight, boogie or whatever - Coco Sumner just blames herself. One month to go before her debut album The Constant is out, the young brit lady stuns us with both her natural beauty and the beautiful aesthetic of her videos. And then there's that voice, of course.

Katy B - Louder
A: Katy B
S: Louder
C: Katy On A Mission - EP
I like this one, then I don't, then I do. Katy B is dubstep's first proper pop star and ready to rave. Funny Story: A few days before her biggest gig to date, at Annie Mac's Ibiza Rocks blowout this summer, some guys tried to sell her some tickets for the afterparty to the show she was actually headlining herself. Ha.
